We got up early today to go to the Shenzhen airport to fly to Kashgar. Eric organized that one of his friends with a car drop us off. Very nice of him. When we arrived at the airport we strapped all our boxes again and got them wrapped with cling wrap so they don't get damaged more and to cover the wholes already in them.
We then rushed to check in and found out we had to pay an extra 900 RMB (over R 1000) for extra weight. Not happy we then sent the boxes through the x-ray machine and Muis had to open his box and pack out half his stuff because they saw something that looked fishy. Muis was fuming because we just paid to get the boxes closed up properly. It turned out they saw our “mielie meel” and energy drink and thought it might be drugs.
We then flew to Urumqi and waited for the flight to Kashgar after we went through the whole checking and paying for overweight luggage process a second time. We arrived in Kashgar just after 11 at night and then tried to organize a lift to the hostel we read about on the net. Everyone claims the hostel has been destroyed and we thought it was just a way to cheat us and gain a commission by taking us somewhere expensive. We then waited around for an hour for the airport bus to take us to a cheap place. They dropped us at Qhini Back Hotel and we got a bed for R30 each which is average for China.
