Cycling Day: 18
Distance: 132km
Since the cycle to Tallinn, my brakes have been making a grinding noise. We thought it was probably just mud and dirt stuck to the brake pads and because we stored the bikes at Marko's workplace, we didn’t have a chance to check them the day before. This morning while stopping to buy snacks, Lance checked my brakes and we discovered that the brake pads had been completely worn through. The grinding noise was metal to metal and it had already hurt my rims a little bit. We found a bike shop and replaced the brake pads, so we got off to a late start.
We have noticed all the hamburgers in Estonia must be mass produced somewhere, because they are all exactly the same - pork patty, salad and lots of pink sauce. It is not too bad if you have one for the first time, but we have had a lot because they are relatively cheap and were getting quite sick of them. Anyway, enough about food…
The plan for today was to cycle 140km to Pussi and camp somewhere in the forest, but because we were running late, we decided to camp close to Rakvere (we could afford to do that because the next day’s cycle was not too long). We did shopping for dinner in Rakvere and when we got out of the supermarket, two Russian guys gave us beer and chatted with us for a while. As soon as we started cycling, it started to rain, but luckily only for about 30 minutes. When the sun came out again, we saw the most beautiful rainbow we have ever seen. It was a complete arch with clear, bright colours and a less clear rainbow above it. It was also the first time we have ever seen the start/end of a rainbow, we didn’t know this was possible, but you could see exactly where the rainbow started, the houses and trees behind it were pink and blue.
About 10km out of Rakvere, we found a spot in the forest to camp. It was also just soon enough, because Billy got another puncture. Camping in the forest is very easy in Estonia, the only problem is the millions of mosquitoes. We cooked a nice pasta with tomato and crabsticks and it was still light outside when we went to sleep (just after 12 o'clock).
